In New York City, and especially here in the Teen Vogue offices, fashion week is a big deal. (Even for a girl like me, who’s more dress-for-comfort than runway ready.) It’s also exciting for fashion-savvy artists who are in town, like the lovely Alison Sudol, AKA: A Fine Frenzy (www.afinefrenzy.com).
Alison was in town for the showsâ¿¿and a big performance on Lettermanâ¿¿and she kept a daily record of her first-ever fashion week. So without further ado, I present an excerpt ofâ¿¿ the adventures of Alison in Fashionland:
"Clothes clothes clothes!!! Clothes everywhere! Is it Christmas??? A haute couture hurricane? No no, it’s FASHION WEEK! I’ve never seen anything like it. I arrived in NY on Sunday night, Feb 3rd, from Louisville, Kentucky (where we’d just concluded our week long promo tour, very fun), made myself a salad at Whole Foods, worked out and went to sleep.
Monday morning started out with a bang. I had a fitting at a fashion PR and event production company. The designer? Anna Sui. The clothes? Beautiful. I fell in love with a pair of plaid black and white high-waisted pants and a blue and white striped dress with 40s inspired sleeves and a sparkly green and blue belt. After the fitting, we went to the Jill Stuart show at the NY Public Library. I didn’t see any books! I did see my very first fashion show, though. Very exciting! The show was mostly clothes in gray, navy, and lighter blues, with a bit of brown and gold thrown in here and there. The clothes reminded me of the book I’m reading, The Fountainhead.

A few hours later, my friend Matt picked me up and we went to Prada! It was my second time being dressed (the first was for Jay Leno last year), and I was beyond excited. I do not get used to such things. There were several dresses for me to try on. They were all gorgeous but my three favorites were a navy blue strapless dress, a pink and cream concoction that made me feel like a little girl and a silky black dress that felt like being kissed by rose petals. There was a campaign for the blue, but the black won out.

That night, I went to Betsey Johnson’s party at a club called Socialista. I liked the place immediately. It reminded me of an old-fashioned cafe in the South: high ceilings, big fans, dark wooden tables and an enormous antique mirror that I wish I could have taken home with me. The party made me feel a bit awkward... lots of models and fashion-y people all looking very hip and not particularly sociable. I felt a little like the school nerd, but I shook that off. Smiling and nerdy is the new scowling and skinny.
The next day we had a performance at Sirius radio and after that, I went shopping in SoHo. I wasn’t sure I had what I wanted to wear on Letterman the next day (woooo!). But I didn’t find anything, not even a Jamba Juice :( â¿¿ "
Will Alison find something to wear for Letterman? Will she bump elbows with more designers at fancy parties? Find out tomorrow inâ¿¿ the continuing adventures of Alison in Fashionland!
